France, Ballon Monté; Used to Isle of Wight: "MONTGOLFIER" Flight; 30c brown, tied by "34" in star cancel on beat blue envelope bearing manuscript "Par Ballon Monte", "Angleterre", PARIS AVENUE JOSEPHINE 25 OCT 79 c.d.s. and red boxed DD handstamp, on reverse COWES NO 3 70 receiver. Just lovely. (Scott BN 18 $4,150 )
Much of the mail from the "MONTGOLFIER" flight was captured by the Germans and received no arrival markings. There were no examples in the "Gaetano Vullo", Schoendorf or Forster Collections and the single example in the great Golden collection was an internal usage. A very rare surviving flight to a rare destination.
