Kelleher and Rogers Limited Sale: 45

Chinese Republic
1912 "Republic of China" Overprints
Sale No: 45
Lot No: 2069
Symbol: o
Cat No: 164b

image image 1912, Statistical Dept. "Republic of China" overprint, $1 red and flesh, inverted overprint (Chan 164b. Scott 158a), basic stamp position 45, overprint type 4, resilient colors, outstanding centering, clearly cancelled by "Kwangtung, Kwangchow" (Canton) c.d.s. of 17 June, 1st year (1912), one thin perforation at left which is of no consequence to the exceptional quality of what is one of the great rarities of the early Republic, Very Fine, and one of the finest examples extant, especially so with such a legible cancellation.

There are probably only 10 or so documented examples of this variety known to date. Of these, only four examples, including the above, have the complete "June 17 1st year date".

From studies undertaken of the genuine extant examples, it appears that all were used on the same day, 17 June 1st year (1912), in Kwangtung, Kwangchow, though the city and province names are not legible on some of the examples.

Cat No: PN7

image image 1912, Foochow "Provisional Neutrality" overprint, 10¢ blue, unissued (Chan PN7), crisply printed basic stamp with rich, clear overprint, disturbed o.g.; perforation toning, still Fine to Very Fine and rare, with 2024 P.F. certificate.

Following the October 1911 Revolution, the postal authorities ordered the Statistical Department to overprint "Provisional Neutrality" on the fifteen values of the unwatermarked Coiling Dragons issue. The Republican Government objected, however, criticizing the wording and ordering all such overprinted stamps suspended from sale and returned to the Shanghai General Post Office for further processing. Only the 3c and $1 to $5 denominations were briefly put on sale at Foochow for a few days in February 1912, thus making it into collectors' hands. This is one of the eleven values successfully recalled by the Republican Government. Est. HK$5,000-6,000

image image 1914-19, First Peking printing, $2 black and blue, center inverted (Chan 245a. Extremely Fine. Of peerless quality, and one of the most notable and desirable examples of this rare variety.

Only two sheets of fifty (100 stamps) were printed with the center inverted.

Although a number of marginal examples are known, this is believed to be one of only two surviving corner examples.

1922-1925 Surcharges on Junk Peking Printings
Sale No: 45
Lot No: 2076
Symbol: *
Cat No: 280a

image image 1923, Junk, First Peking printing, surcharged in red, 2c on 3c blue green, inverted surcharge (Chan 280a. Scott 247a), deep bright color, characteristic centering to lower right, fresh, unused with large part original gum, customary flat gum and streaks, Very Fine.

It is believed that there are less than twenty examples known of this error. According to contemporary reports, thirteen of these stamps were acquired at the port of Wanhsien in July, 1924, by Dr. A. Germain, the medical officer on the French gunboat "Balny". He applied two of the stamps to separate covers which he mailed to himself locally and sold ten mint examples to the French dealer Theodore Champion.

Our auction records list fourteen unused examples and two single stamps used on separate envelopes.
