1882-86 Royal Navy family letters from one Obediah J Knight aboard HMS 'Harrier' including headed "Suez/Egypt/May 1st 82", "Pomony
Bay/Island of Johanna" (= Anjouan, in the Comoros), "Zanzibar/10.9.83" or "Cooktown/Queensland/August 6th 1884" (sadly reinforced with 'sticky' tape); aboard HMS 'Tamar' headed "Malta/Mar 10th 1885"; aboard HMS 'Malabar' headed "Malta/March 6th
1886"; aboard HMS 'Euphrates' headed "Malta/Dec 4th 1886" or "Bombay/24.12.86", fine to very fine. [Interesting contents from Suez "[Harrier] was ...purchased by the Admiralty for slave service in the Mozambique Channel..."; from Anjouan "...it is a
dismal place...several villages...are always at war with each other..[re a captured ship]...we burnt her here and took her captain and crew to Zanzibar for trial..."; from Zanzibar "...we have missed receiving three mails..."; and from Cooktown
"...there are very few natives left here now...en route for New Guinea thence to the New Hebrides as we have a lot of mails for different ships..." High adventure!
