machine, to "Military Prison Camp No 10", faint US censor, routed via Europe where it was treated with a strip of copper sulphate solution to expose any hidden message, German censor label and cachet on the reverse, light 'RETURNED TO SENDER/By
Direction of the War Department/ Untraceable as Addressed' & New York machine backstamp of DEC28/1945. Received in Tokyo after Japan had surrendered. David Tett in Volume 5 at page 27 notes that only 20% of the inmates survived the war. He recorded

'Gripsholm' ex New York 2.9.1943; arrived Marmagao, Portuguese India 16.10.1943; then per 'Teia Maru' which arrived Manila 7.11.1943.

for Los Banos, repaired damage across both labels. With the chatty letter from the internee's mother stating "...I have sent you [& your father] both a box...I hope to get a letter some day". Per the second exchange voyage by the 'Gripsholm' ex New
York 2.9.1943; arrived Marmagao, Portuguese India 16.10.1943; then per 'Teia Maru' which arrived Manila 7.11.1943.

"Canadian Civilian Internee/Santo Tomas Camp/Manila" with mute security machine of Vancouver (?) & straight-line censor cachet, superb 'RETURN TO SENDER FREE/BY ORDER OF POSTMASTER GENERAL/RECOVERED FROM JAPANESE' cachet, light bends. Illustrated by
