1930 (June 24) to England with 1½d Huts solo tied by largely very fine 'POST OFFICE/SALAMAOA' cds and very unusual 'AIR TO PORT
M-Y' jusqu'a handstamp in violet below, manuscript "Tax/3d" in blue pencil alongside, a few aging marks & minor edge faults mostly on the reverse. The New Guinea Airways Port Moresby to Salamaua service began in late-1929 to connect the Goldfields
areas with outgoing mailboats. The rate was 1½d domestic letter (increased to 2d per 1oz from 4.8.1930) plus 1½d per ½oz airmail surcharge to Port Moresby and onwards by ship. The surcharge was not paid, hence the item was taxed double deficiency
(but not collected). The jusqu'a marking is unrecorded, and we have not seen an example previously. (Image1) (Image2)
