1848 (July 9-31) series of nine contemporary duplicate letters headed "Cape Riche" and signed "Jas Chas Coke" (or initialled "JCC")
of the Schooner 'Wave', a bit fragile but wholly legible. Three of the 10th, to Albany Perth & Adelaide reporting that "...the Schr Wave was stranded on the 5th inst having snapped both Cables, and am afraid will become a total loss. The Goods are
more or less damaged...a native was sent [overland] to KG Sound [Albany, on King George Sound] for Lieut Belcher RN who arrived here yesterday in HMC Schooner 'Champion'...are now surveying the 'Wave' ...am much afraid she will be a total loss..."
To Perth: "...The letters addressed for England you will also be kind enough to forward by ship to Singapore or Batavia & not per Hindoo...the postage please debit the firm. Also a letter of the 10th from the naval party to Coke "...we recommend that
great exertions should be made to free her with the pumps..." Also included is a copy of Coke's formal "public instrument of protest", with amendments, and a full inventory endorsed "July 26 48/Sale of Cargo of Schr 'Wave' at Cape Riche". Ex Dr Cecil
Walkley. Never previously offered at auction.
Cape Riche is about 85km NE of Albany. The area was used by whalers & sandalwood-cutters. Total loss of the 'Wave' was reported in 'The Perth Gazette' on 22.7.1848. The cargo not salvaged by the naval party was sold to the owners of the 'Argenteur',
which also acquired the rigging & sails. Brian Peace does not record this incident, nor is it in his appendix of incidents that may have involved mail. This archive proves that 'Wave' was carrying mail for England.

including this item, and we have recorded three others. Cecil Walkley's cover to Perth sold at our auction of 27.11.2010 for $1205 and an uprated 1895 Postal Card with poor cds sold at our auction of 2.8.2013 for $1955. (Image1) (Image2)
