1953 (May 6) Winns Ltd airmail to "Yaren District/Nauru Island/Central Pacific" with 1/- Lyrebird tied by Sydney slogan, 'AIR
SERVICE/COMPLETED/AT SYDNEY' (struck in error & crossed-out) and 'AIR SERVICE/ NOT AVAILABLE' cachets both in violet, 'NAURU/7JE53/CENTRAL PACIFIC' arrival cds on the face, minor imperfections. There were no regular air services to Nauru until the
1970s. The airport was built in the Yaren District during WWII by the Japanese using forced labour. However, until 1970 it was used only irregularly. (Image1) (Image2)

1954 (Feb 9) airmail postcard to Colombia with Hermes 1/6d black tied by Sydney slogan, 'CORREO AEREO/16.2.54/CARTAGENA' arrival
cds, minor blemishes. Airmail postcards to Latin America are rare. The rate from 1.8.1952 was 1/6d. [Cartagena is almost 1000km NNW of the capital, Bogota, on the Caribbean coast. The Miami-Bogota airmail service probably had a stop at Cartagena] (Image1) (Image2)

of the boxed 'SALVAGED MAIL/AIRCRAFT CRASH/SINGAPORE 13.3.1954' cachet in rosine. Covers from the crash are regularly seen, but postcards are very scarce. (Image1) (Image2)

1954 (Mar 12) large-part oversize cover (305x250mm) airmail to Switzerland with Lyrebird 1/- + Arms 5/- x3 10/- & £1 tied by Sydney
cds, very fine boxed 'SALVAGED MAIL/AIRCRAFT CRASH/SINGAPORE 13.3.1954' cachet in rosine, partly-burned clear of the adhesives. Standard articles from this crash are regularly seen, and they are mostly addressed to Britain. Examples to other
countries are scarce, and over-size items are rarely available. Brian Peace's Census includes only seven items to Switzerland. Andrew Norris' similarly damaged oversize cover to Austria (six items recorded) sold this year for £980. (Image1) (Image2)

1954 (Mar 12) complete oversize cover (360x238mm) airmail to London with extremely rare franking of Arms £2 green & 5/- tied by
Sydney cds, two largely very fine strikes of the boxed 'SALVAGED MAIL/AIRCRAFT CRASH/SINGAPORE 13.3.1954' cachet in rosine, secured with adhesive tape apparently applied before despatch. Rodney Perry stated "fewer than five covers with the £2 green
are known". We expect this is the only such survivor from this famous disaster. (Image1) (Image2)

1954 (Oct 18) airmail to the American Embassy in Afghanistan with 2/- Aboriginal Art tied by Sydney slogan, light horizontal fold,
tape-stain on the reverse & a bit aged. A rare destination. Martin Walker (unpublished) states the rate between 1.8.1952 & 13.7.1958 was 1/3d, confirmed from a cover in Andrew Norris' collection. We expect that the sender thought because he was
sending to the American Embassy (legally US territory) he had to pay the 2/- rate to the USA. (Image1) (Image2)

transits & 'AUST UNIT POSTAL STN/27OC51/495' arrival cds. The Forces rate was 1d + 9d registration. However, airmail required an extra 3d so it was underpaid 3d but not taxed. (Image1) (Image2)

1955 (June 2) large-part OHMS linen parcel tag with printed address 'The Secretary of State for/External Affairs/ Ottawa, Canada'
and endorsed "SEA", with exceptional franking of QM 2d + Lyrebird 1/- + Arms 10/- & £2 green (undercatalogued at $1250 on cover with other stamps) tied by Canberra cds, smudged Ottawa arrival cds of JUL/12/1955, corner clipped. Ex Arthur Gray: sold
with Lot 607 for £660. Because the weight exceeded the parcel limit of 11lb, it had to be paid at the Empire surface rate of 3½d for the 1st oz + 2½d for each successive ounce x240 = £2/10/3½d for an article weighing 15lb1oz + registration 9d, so 1½d
convenience overpayment. (Image1)

1955 (Dec 14) airmail to Austria with scarce franking of Aborigine 2/6d block of 4 tied by 'WENTWORTH FALLS/NSW' cds, minor
imperfections. The rate was 2/- x5. The cover probably contained a Christmas card, so it could have been sent at the "Other Articles" rate of 3/- per 2oz. However, that was a slower service. (Image1) (Image2)
