1922 (Dec 8) official cover with 'TASMANIA/[coat-of-arms]' on the flap apparently posted in a Launceston pillar box but it
presumably contained something of value so endorsed "OR/To Pay 1/6" & the solo KGV 2d scarlet tied by Registration cds, scarce red/white R label with tiny 'Launceston' affixed, remarkable mixed issue Postage Dues franking of Blank Tablet (issued
1902) 4d single & strip of 3 + Third Wmk Thin Paper 2d tied by fine to very fine strikes of the rubber 'DEVONPORT WEST/TASMANIA' cds in violet.
At the time, the rate was 2d per half-ounce. We surmise that the item weighed close to 2oz so was shortpaid 2d x3 = 6d + the registration fee of 3d + an equivalent fine of 9d = 1/6d due. Beautiful, and an absolute cracker! One of the most outstanding
Postage Due covers we have seen. (Image1) (Image2)

1930 (circa) large piece with return address "Coreen, NSW", to Melbourne with KGV 2d 3d & 4d tied by indistinct cds of Coreen with

1932 Electrolytic Refining & Smelting Co (Port Kembla) unaddressed parcel tag with outstanding 5-values multicoloured franking of
Kangaroos Third Wmk £1 grey + Small Multiple Wmk 6d chestnut, 2/- maroon, 5/- grey & yellow and £2 grey & rose-carmine tied by poor 'WOLLONGONG/8DE32/NSW' cds & blue-pencil registration lines, blue & black/white registration label, a couple of minor
bends well clear of the High Values. Ex Kevin Nelson (sold at our auction of 27.11.2010 for $13,225), Peter O'Rourke (sold in 2020 for $11,160), and Andrew Tan. RPSofV Certificate (2011). A highly significant item for the collector of Kangaroo usage,
or parcels. Only two other entire postal articles franked with the Small Multiple Watermark Two Pounds: one is a parcel tag & the other is a large parcel piece with three examples: see the next Lot.
The ER&S Co was established in 1908 at Port Kembla to smelt copper and, to a lesser extent, silver & gold. It is expected that the parcel contained ore samples and was sent to America. Bullion was required to be sent at letter rates (at this time 3d
per ounce). However, a concessional rate of 2d per ounce - the same as the domestic letter rate - applied. The rate was thus 2d x403 = 806d = £3/7/2d for an ingot weighing 403oz (= just over 25 pounds) + 3d registration + 1d convenience
over-payment. (Image1)

1933 (Mar 25) large parcel-piece (rebacked on a slightly larger piece of 253x178mm) endorsed at upper-left "accepted/weight/32lbs/J
Hart/Inquiry Office/GPO/Sydney/£17.1.4", by airmail to "Donald Harkness/Newcastle Waters/Nthn Territory" with outrageous franking of Kangaroos Third Wmk £1 grey x11 (including two pairs & a strip of 3) and SMult Wmk 1/- & £2 x3 (including a pair) +
KGV 4d olive tied by generally poor Sydney cds (consistent with the bulky nature of the contents), minor stains, professionally restored with numerous creases ironed-out. Ex Martin Greive, Martin Walker, Rodney Perry (once advertised by Rod for sale
for $140,000), and Andrew Tan.
Because the weight exceeded the maximum parcel limit of 11 pounds (lb), the article had to be paid at the prevailing letter rate of 2d per oz x512 plus airmail supplement of 3d per ½oz x1024 = £17/1/4d, making this the highest-franked item of
pre-WWII Australian postal history recorded. Only ten covers bearing the Third Wmk £1 grey are known, this being the record franking. Only three items - the others are parcel tags: see the previous Lot - are recorded bearing the SMult Wmk £2, again
this being the record franking.
Donald James Harkness was an Australian aviation & motoring enthusiast. In 1925, he broke the Australian land speed record over one mile with a run of 108mph, increasing that in 1929 to 128mph. In 1932, over a distance of 10 miles, he set a world
record of 164mph. In 1930, he developed the 'Harkness Hornet' aero-engine, the first built locally to pass the government's airworthiness testing. We were unable to locate information about the incident in the Northern Territory but we expect his
vehicle suffered a mechanical breakdown and required parts to be rushed to him by air. (Image1)
