AUSTRALIA - CONVICTS: 'The Life of Lewis Bartram' manuscript autobiography handwritten on 60 pages of blue paper, together with an
86 page copy on white paper (with triangular section missing from base of each page), together they form a detailed report of Lewis Bartram's life. Lewis was born in Cranfield, Bedfordshire, one of 12 children. At 16 years of age he was charged with
having stolen ducks with his older brother Henry and Thomas Horn. All three were condemned to seven years transportation. After some time in a prison hulk Lewis was transported to Van Diemen's Land with 209 other convicts on the 'Emperor Alexander'
in 1833 (his brother was transported to NSW). Whilst still serving his sentence he married Fanny Lloyd on April 18 1839, and soon after on June 3 1839 applied for a Ticket of Leave. Ten years later they had one child John Bartram, but Fanny died of
asthma when he was just 5 months old. Lewis remarried to Ann Williams in Launceston in 1850 and had a further six children Martha, Elizabeth, Sarah, Rachael, Joseph & Robert. Lewis died on 19th December 1900. [One of his many descendants is Neal
Blewett, who served as the Federal Minister for Health in the 1980s]. (Image1) (Image2)
