AUSTRALIA: 1935 Jubilee Medal by the Royal Mint presented to Dr. J.J.C. Bradfield CMG, 23 Park Avenue, Gordon, with official
Buckingham Palace presentation certificate dated 6 May 1935 and registered envelope dated 13 May 35. Ex Noble 2011 sale 97 lot 805, with invoice for $2330.
Dr John Job Crew Bradfield (1867-1943) is associated with a great range of engineering works including the Cataract Dam near Sydney and the Burrinjuck Dam. In 1912, he submitted a design for a proposed cantilever suspension bridge connecting Dawes
Point to Milson's Point (North Sydney). The following year, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Public Works recommended acceptance of his proposal, and he was appointed Chief Engineer for metropolitan railway construction. Under his watch, the
St James and Museum underground stations were opened, and the 'city loop' was completed in 1955 with the construction of Circular Quay station, also designed by Bradfield. When he retired in 1933, he was recognised as the designer of the Harbour
Bridge, the Director of Public Works stating "no other person by any stretch of the imagination can claim the distinction". However, Dorman Long - the British firm that supplied the steel for the bridge - had made minor modifications to the design,
and threatened legal action if Bradfield's name was placed on the plaque as designer. Nevertheless, Sir Philip Game, Governor of NSW, named the roadway across the bridge 'Bradfield Highway' in his honour. (3 items) (Image1) (Image2)
