While Berry created several designs for the competition for this issue, his submissions were ultimately rejected as he was not an Australian resident. His work can be found on the stamps of a number of countries, including New Zealand, Western Samoa, Cook Islands, Niue, Tonga, and Bermuda. In 1948, Weekly Philatelic Gossip described him as "the greatest postage stamp designer in the world". Christopher Green Ltd. Item#:165 Booth #714 (Image) (Image 2)

Fitzgibbon writes "Brother - May I request of you to place in the hands of Brother Dean, on or before the 6th July next, a Bill for £50 Sterling, to be remitted to London to pay the fees on the Warrant, and in part payment for the Jewels for the New Lodge….As this charge will hereafter be defeated from the funds of the Lodge, each Brother will be reimbursed the sum now called for, and which may be considered as an advance. I remain fraternally yours, James FitzGibbon”
Fitzgibbon, praised for achieving the surrender of 462 American officers and men at the Battle of Beaver Dam, and for his role in suppressing the Rebellion of 1837, was a prominent Freemason, serving as Deputy Provincial Grand Master - the most senior office in Upper Canada - from 1822 to 1826. The addressee, Robert Baldwin Sullivan, served as Mayor of York and on Sir Francis Bond Head’s Executive Council at the time of the Rebellion. A wonderful letter between two significant Upper Canadian figures. Christopher Green Ltd. Item#:119 Booth #714 (Image)
Gesner writes that ”I have got the patent most favourably noticed in the leading American journals..."noting also that he "shall get to trial with the gas company here in April..." and that "the [New Brunswick] asphalt melts and drops in the centre of the flame of a candle, is highly electric, and is readily dissolved in naphtha and oils...’” However, he further highlights some of the many challenges he faces, writing "I have also proved my gas apparatus - this extension of the kerosene gas progresses but you will readily perceive how we are embarrassed so long as our villainous opponents keep the Hillsboro asphalt more out of our possession..."
Legal challenges dogged Gesner throughout his attempts to obtain patents, but the company he founded - the North American Kerosene Gas Light Co, was eventually purchased by Standard Oil.
An exceptional letter from one of the primary founders of the petroleum industry, illuminating his relationship with one of the most renowned British naval commanders of the nineteenth century. Christopher Green Ltd. Item#:120 Booth #714 (Image) (Image 2)
