822 / On piece, front, etc. / imageTristan da Cunha: 1925 “PETITION/From the Inhabitants of Tristan da Cunha respecting Letter and Parcel Mails to the Island” submitted to the Secretary of State, signed carbon copy of the original from the personal files of D.M. Gane, with copy of official response from Downing Street, trimmed and mounted on two pages. This petition had been first raised by Rev. Rogers during the harsh winter of 1922 and was accompanied by the signatures or marks of 39 male islanders. Champion of the rights of the Tristan inhabitants, Douglas Gane submitted regular suggestions to the Post Office and Colonial Office including the granting of Crown colony status and the issue of postage stamps with resulting fundraising benefits, a proposal to which then Colonial Secretary, Winston Churchill, added his support but which was rejected by the Post Office. The 1925 Petition, although failing in its appeal for the promise of a mail at least annually, did draw the attention of the public and contributed significantly to a raised awareness of the islanders’ difficult situation over the following years.
