737 / c, entire, etc. / imageAscension: Incoming Mail, 1899 (Nov. 25) letter from “CAPTAIN IN CHARGE’S OFFICE,/GARRISON/Ascension Island” written by Capt. George W. Pollard addressed to the sender of the extraordinary envelope (opened for display) posted Apr. 18 from Philadelphia to H.M.S. “Wallaroo” at Samoa, forwarded with ms. redirections, transit datestamps and due markings to Nouméa, Sydney, Melbourne and Cape Town before finally catching up with Pollard at Ascension, the cover duly returned to the sender to justify his slow response blaming “a terrible muddle of it at Samoa”. Capt. George Northmore Arthur Pollard (1847-1920) had, after distinguished service in Jamaica and East Africa, been appointed in 1897 to the command of the cruiser “Wallaroo” on the Australian station and in June annexed Rennell, Bellona and the Stewart Islands in the Solomon Islands group to the British crown. He served as Commandant of Ascension from July 15 899 to May 13 1902 and later rose to the rank of Rear Admiral. Photo. (Image1)
