2211 / c, entire, etc. / imageNigeria: Lagos: 1821 (Apr. 6) letter to James McQueen (1778-1870) from John Barrow thanking him for his book ‘A Geographical and Commercial View of Northern Central Africa’ with the comment ‘I cannot subscribe to your notions regarding that river (the Niger), nor give any credit to many of the authorities you quote, yet as far as the occupation of Fernando Poo goes I am most cordially with you....”. Sir John Barrow (1764-1848) rose from common origins to become one of the most influential figures in British naval history. In 1804 he was appointed Second Secretary to the Admiralty, a position from which, over the next forty years, he effectively supported and encouraged British exploration, particularly in West Africa and the Arctic.
