Lot Symbol Descrip Opening
482 / c, entire, etc. imageFalkland Islands Dependencies: Operation Tabarin: 1944 (Feb. 21) official/proving cover sent to Mrs P.S. Schor in Montevideo, franked correctly for foreign rate by South Orkneys 3d. tied by C1 c.d.s. with Mar. 15 arrival on reverse. In order to demonstrate the existence of post offices in the territories, the British Government had provided lists of addresses with instructions that covers should be mailed from all four Dependencies to designated officials in Great Britain, the Falkland Islands and selected foreign countries. Mrs Schor’s husband, Percival Samuel Schor (1905-1967), had first gone to Uruguay to teach and became Headmaster of The British School in Montevideo in 1929. During W.W.II he had left to work in the Department of Naval Intelligence at the Admiralty and returned to Uruguay in 1946, resuming his post as Headmaster in 1947. As the South Orkneys base had yet to be established, mail was cancelled on board HMS “William Scoresby” lying off Signy Island on this date. Photo. (Image1)
