Type 1 serifed overprint on Cape of Good Hope: 3d. on 1d. carmine, vertical pair, used on 1900 (Mar. 27) cover to Egypt, endorsed at top “via North and German East Africa Line of Mail Steamers to Suez”. However it did not go by this route but south via Barkly West to Cape Town, where it was sent to London. In London it received the hexagonal tax mark with letter “L” below as it was underpaid by 6d. On arrival in Cairo it weas surcharged with the Egyptian 4m. postage due stamp. This is the only recorded cover sent from Mafeking showing a postage due stamp. Photo. (Image1)
