Postage Due Stamps

82 c.1912 Essays in pencil and indian ink for a 2d postage due stamp, the two essays similar in design but showing differences in the side details and size of wording, with a stamp size pencil drawing of the current 1d postage stamp alongside, all drawn by Mr H.J Howard who worked in the Secretary's office at the G.P.O, believed to have been submitted to the 1912 Conference which discussed the proposal to issue postage due stamps (recommending that five values of dues be issued, the design brief being given to George Eve). The two essays each 90x100mm, on thick card (255x316mm), a further stamp size essay excised from the upper left corner (believed to be in the Royal Collection), central horizontal fold and small split at upper right corner (well away from the essays), a unique and important item in the development of the first G.B postage due stamps, with an article on these essays by Graham Mark.

83 1914-23 Simple Cypher Issue with Specimen overprints, comprising set of eight (both 1/- bright blue and deep bright blue shades) with type 23 overprint, 2d and 3d type 26 overprint, also 2d colour trials in carmine, Bartolozzi brown and blue green with type 23 overprint, 3d type 23 a little stained, otherwise fine. 84 1914 2d Agate upper right corner marginal strip of four (left pane), watermark sideways inverted and reversed, the watermark displaced downwards resulting in the strip watermarked "POSTAGE", superb unmounted mint. A unique variety, this strip the example recorded in the S.G. specialised catalogue as S.G. R41ba. With R.P.S Certificate (2011).

94 1877 Linen backed wrapper "From Peter Robinson, Oxford St., London W - Please use this wrapper (reversed) to return", posted in London franked 8½d, comprising ½d + 1d (2) + 6d on 6d tied by dumb cancels. The inside bears the address of Peter Robinson and printed letter rates, with the instructions not to exceed 12 ounces; despite this the wrapper has been posted from London at the printed papers rate for an item of 34 ounces weight. An unusual franking and rate.
