VERY FINE. A RARE AND IMPORTANT COVER DATED DECEMBER 20, 1860, WHICH IS THE DATE SOUTH CAROLINA VOTED TO SECEDE FROM THE UNION BY UNANIMOUS VOTE, PROPELLING THE NATION INTO CIVIL WAR.
On December 20, 1860, a secession convention called by the South Carolina legislature voted unanimously, 169-0, to secede from the United States. After Lincoln's election on Nov. 6, 1860, South Carolina recognized the impending threat to the slave system. South Carolina's secession, and the disarray it caused in the Buchanan administration, encouraged other states to secede; the next state to secede was Mississippi on Jan. 9, 1861 followed by a host of others.
