VERY FINE. ONE OF FOUR RECORDED USED TETE-BECHE PAIRS OF THE NASHVILLE 5-CENT VIOLET BROWN -- THIS BEING THE ONLY SOUND PAIR.
Peter Powell’s study of the 5c Nashville (Plating the Nashville Provisional,” Confederate Philatelist, January- March 2008) concluded that stereotype groups of six units, three wide by two tall, were used to build up the printing plates. Based on plate flaws unique to specific positions, Powell also concluded that the plate size was no less than 18 subjects, made from at least three sixunit stereotype groups, and that more than one plate was made. The tete-beche arrangement in printed sheets occurred when one impression was made, then the sheet was turned 180 degrees, and a second impression was made.
This pair was in the 1933 Hind sale as a strip with a third stamp attached at bottom (see Crown book, page 252, for before and after photos).
Ex Hind, Hessel, Golden (Dukeshire”) and Cunliffe. With 2009 P.F. certificate. (Image)
VERY FINE AND RARE EXAMPLE OF THE 5-CENT VIOLET BROWN NASHVILLE PROVISIONAL USED ON A SHORT-PAID COVER.
The due marking was applied at Memphis in transit to Arkansas via the Little Rock and Memphis Railroad, after it was determined that Gaines Landing exceeded the distance for the 5c rate. Gaines Landing lies on the Mississippi River, approximately 350 miles south of Memphis.
