2376 nhbl C80var image1935 F.Vaitkus commemorative issue, 40c carmine rose & blue, overprinted in black "F.Vaitkus Nugalejo Atlanta 21-22-IV-1935" (F.Vaitkus Conquered the Atlantic), block of 12 (4x3), n.h., folded between stamps, slight wrinkles and gum creases, still fine-v.f., with handstamped guarantee marks. Of the total 2,100 issued, 450 were sent to members of the UPU, 100 were presented as gifts to officials, 300 were sold at the Kaunas Central Post Office (for a few hours), 400 were affixed on covers for the return flight to the United States, The remainder were sold by the Aero Club of Lithuania for 25 Litas each, the proceeds to be used for the promotion of aviation. Needless to say, many were lost during the war. Multiples are scarce, this being one of the largest known, ex-Matuzas (Mi.404) cat. €4800 (Cat No. C80var) (Image) $3,500
