2110 og Mi. #13 imageMichel #13, 1900 50pf Purple and black on pale brownish red with provisional Tientsin handstamp "China" overprint, a fabulous mint example of the rarest of the regularly issued values of the Tientsin Provisional Issue, possessing many exemplary physical characteristics that are rarely found even on the more common values, including being precisely centered amid wide even margins, fully surrounded by even flawless perforations, fresh bright colors and most significant, a lovely strong strike of the overprint in the sooty intense black, characteristic of the first printings of this issue, full o.g., very lightly hinged, extremely fine in all respects. This rare and popular overprinted issue of the German Offices in China came about because a quantity of the various values of the Germania stamps were transmitted to the German Post Office in Tientsin from the military feldpost offices. Because of regional differences in currency exchange a person could buy mint German stamps at the post office in China and take them back to Germany where he could resell them at a handsome profit. Previously stamps had been officially overprinted "China" in Berlin for use in China for the same reason. So under these emergency conditions the postmaster at Tientsin decided to overprint this supply of stamps in a similar manner so that they could only be properly used for postage in China. It is not accurately known how many of each value were overprinted. The official postmaster's report indicates that 300 of each of the 30pf, 50pf and 80pf values were overprinted, but experience in the philatelic market has indicated that the 50pf is by far the rarest. The 50pf, being the first value to be issued, was also proportionately more used than the other values making mint examples even rarer yet. Hans Bothe in his certificate stressed that the exceptional condition of this example in its centering, freshness, color and its fault-free condition places this example far above the usual example of this value that is offered. A marvelous rarity in magnificent condition and certainly among the finest available of the tiny number in existence; signed Thier, Senf and Bothe BPP, plus accompanied by 1978 Hans Bothe BPP certificate and a 1998 Jakubek BPP opinion (Scott #22; $30,000.00). (Image) €40,000

SOLD for $37,500.00

Bloch (Scott #23; $4,000.00). (Image) €5,000
