387a |
#387a, 1959 5c St. Lawrence Seaway, Center
Inverted, top right corner sheet-margin block of four "plate block"
position, bright fresh colors on pristine white paper, o.g., especially
clean o.g., never hinged, usual post office pad staple holes in top
selvage, very fine. As was the policy of the Canadian Post Office during
this time period, sheets of stamps supplied to the various post offices had
the selvage inscriptions (and plate numbers) trimmed off to reduce the
number of broken panes in post office stocks (caused by collector
requests). The only way collectors could obtain plate number blocks were
from sheets that were supplied through the Philatelic Service of the post
office. The famous Seaway Invert found its way to the public through
purchases by customers at regular post office windows, so no "traditional"
inscription plate blocks can exist. The accepted "plate block" positions
would be blank corner sheet margin blocks, such as the one offered here. We
are aware of only two other such position blocks in private hands. A
handsome showpiece of one of the most famous errors of the 20th century.
Accompanied by a 1983 PF certificate (Unitrade as singles C$60,000.00+). (Image) |

commercial trans-atlantic usage; unquestionably the most spectacular and
important of the 14 known Seaway Invert covers; this showpiece also has
the distinction of being the most valuable picture postcard in existence;
exhibited at Capex '96 and at the Canadian Postal Museum in 1997. (Image) |

SL1a |
Van Dam #SL1a, 1907 Saskatchewan Law stamp, Center
Inverted, an especially fresh example, with strong colors on white
paper, very well centered as well, punch cancel as always but without any
faults or crayon cancel which affects several of the known examples,
extremely fine; although 80 sheets each containing one invert were printed,
less than 10 examples have been recorded, all except one (still in the
original sheet) are used, so it is quite likely that the others were
actually used before the discovery was made and very few, if any,
additional examples will probably ever be found.

Van Dam #SL1a, 1907 Saskatchewan Law stamp, Center
Inverted, another used example of this rare revenue invert, this in the
highly desirable se-tenant pair with a normal stamp, well centered
and very fresh, punch cancel as always, extremely fine; the only other
example existing in a "multiple" format is the full mint sheet containing
an invert at position 19, thus this is unique in the se-tenant pair
format, an important showpiece for either the Canadian revenue
specialist or the inverted centers of the world collector;

Inverted, a desirable mint example of this appealing inverted center
rarity, strong fresh color, quite nicely centered, usual tropicalized o.g.,
light h.r. and small adhesion, very fine; from the original sheet of 100,
78 were used on mail before the error was discovered by a local philatelist
named Elmer Ohlson, therefore only 22 mint examples were recovered
