Closing..Oct-19, 09:00 AM
1132 og U137A image#U137A, 2c Vermilion on white, mint cut square, measuring 33x38mm, brilliantly fresh and clean, with strong color and embossing on bright paper, small thin spot of little relevance considering the enormous rarity of this cut square, still very fine; one of the most important rarities in U.S. postal stationery as it is believed that only two cut squares exist and there are no known entires, with this being the first appearance of a Scott #U137A in over three decades; even the great postal stationery collections formed by such luminary collectors as Lilly, Thorp and Cole did not have an example of this cut square; the catalog value of this cut square has changed little over the years since no example has made an appearance on the auction market, therefore we believe that the final realization of the example offered here will far eclipse its current Scott evaluation; 1995 PF certificate. (Image) 25,000.00

SOLD for $29,000.00
Closing..Oct-19, 09:00 AM
1133 og U137B image#U137B, 2c Vermilion on amber, mint cut square, being a full corner example measuring 32x38mm, quite fresh and clean, trivial slight surface abrasion at right from erasure, of little importance considering this cut square's unique status, very fine; Scott #U137B is one of the greatest rarities not only in the field of postal stationery, but in all of United States philately, as only this cut square, and one other, as well as a single entire are thought to exist (although some experts question whether an entire does indeed exist), an example of this cut square has not appeared at auction in over three decades, therefore the current catalog value is, in our opinion, of little relevance to its actual market value, since the editors have the Scott catalog have not had the benefit of recent auction realizations upon which to base a more accurate price; recent auction realizations of cut squares that are known in "quantities" of three to five have been realizing in excess of $50,000.00; 1995 PF certificate. (Image) 25,000.00

SOLD for $29,000.00
Closing..Oct-19, 09:00 AM
1134 og W138 image#W138, 2c Vermilion on manila, an extraordinarily well margined example of this mint cut square rarity, being one of only six cut squares recorded and there are no known entires, measuring a full 33x37mm, quite fresh and clean, with rich color and well defined embossing, there are a couple of small thin spots of little importance considering how few are known, and most have small faults, otherwise very fine and choice; one of the keys to ever completing a collection of United States cut squares; 1995 PF certificate. (Image) 32,500.00

SOLD for $25,000.00
Closing..Oct-19, 09:00 AM
1135 og U145 image#U145, 2c Vermilion on orange, mint cut square, measuring 34x38mm, extraordinarily fresh and bright, rich unmistakable vermilion color, trivial light corner bend at bottom left mentioned for strict accuracy, very fine and wonderfully choice; an immense cut square rarity as only three cut squares are thought to exist and there are no known entires; this cut square over the years has often been confused with its Two Cent Red Brown counterpart also on orange paper (#U140A) and, in many cases, the two have been certified by the Philatelic Foundation as one in the same; while both Scott numbers are extremely rare, it has been our experience that the true vermilion on orange (which this example clearly is) is, by far, the most elusive of the two, with this being the first such correctly identified example we have ever offered in our auctions; signed as genuine by Richard A. Champagne. (Image) 25,000.00

SOLD for $57,500.00
Closing..Oct-19, 09:00 AM

1138 O U170 image#U170, 3c Green on blue, used cut square, 35x38mm, lightly cancelled, small closed tear at top extends just to top of embossment, very fine appearance for this, one of the rarest cut squares of the period, with only two used cut squares that have been certified, and perhaps no more than five or six in total known; 1998 PF certificate. (Image) 3,500.00

SOLD for $2,000.00
Closing..Oct-19, 09:00 AM
1139 og U171 image#U171, 3c Green on fawn, used cut square, 27x34mm, neat numeral "10" in double circle postmark, quite clean, a very fine example of this extremely rare cut square; used entires are virtually the only way this is attainable, as there are only two mint cut squares known, only seven reported used entires, and there are no mint entires known; 1995 PF certificate. (Image) 3,250.00

SOLD for $2,700.00
Closing..Oct-19, 09:00 AM
1140 ogc U174 image#U174, 5c Blue on cream, die 1, UPSS die 59, size 21, knife 101, wmk. 2, wonderfully fresh large mint entire (only exists in this large size, with three different knife types), fresh and clean, strong embossing, extremely fine and seldom seen (UPSS #465). (Image) 150.00

SOLD for $120.00
Closing..Oct-19, 09:00 AM
