31a |
#31a, 1897 3a on 5a Green, large type, perforated 14 x 13 1/2, the unique mint example being Iceland's rarest mint stamp, marvelously fresh, deep rich color, well
centered, full o.g., small h.r., very fine; the "3 prir" surcharges, either in small or large type, on the 5a stamp perforated 14 x 13 1/2 are among the rarest of all of Iceland's stamps, but they are incredibly rare when found in large type such as
the stamp offered here, currently there are only a handful of known used copies (see next lot for a used copy) and there is only one mint example known, the fantastic stamp offered here; obviously no collection of mint Iceland stamps can be complete
without this famous stamp; signed lightly in pencil by both Witt and Bloch; also accompanied by 1971 Friedl, 1971 Witt and 1999 Møller certificates; ex-Crawfoord and Dr. Scott (Image) |

31a, 32b |
#31a, 32b, 1897 3a on 5a Green, small and large type, perforated 14 x 13 1/2, se-tenant block of four, a spectacular used block of four from the 6th and 7th vertical
row in the sheet, with the top two stamps with small type, while the bottom pair with large type, well centered, each stamp in the block with central strike of "Hraungerdi/5.11" town c.d.s, top right stamp with just the faintest trace of a thin spot
at the edge (if at all), very fine and eye-appealing; as stated in previous lots, the "3 prir" surcharges on the perforated 14 x 13 1/2 issues are extremely rare, to find a used se-tenant block of four containing two of each type size is truly
amazing, in fact to our knowledge there is only one other similar used block known (offered in the October 1999 sale of Dr. Gene Scott's collection); 1964 Grønland certificate (Facit #32-33; 150,000+SEK as used singles, not priced
se-tenant). (Image) |

o.g., lightly hinged, one accompanying certificate (Eldrup) states "the UV-reaction of the original color has been changed in some way, perhaps in order to 'refresh' the appearance, no other changes of the stamp were found", we find no such evidence
however, as the stamp overall is quite fresh and very fine; clear 1964 Grønland and 1993 Eldrup certificates (Facit #39; 75,000SEK). (Image) |
