1893, 2¢ Columbian, First Day Cover (Scott 231), clean, deep-colored an fully margined example, tied on cover
from Minneapolis to New Gloucester, Maine, by Minneapolis Jan. 2 duplex; includes the original correspondence, datelined Minneapolis Jan. 2, 1893, which begins: "Dear Sir, As I was at the Post Office this mornign they told me that the new stamps had
just arrived. I bought a supply, and one of the first I send on this letter to you, thinking that perhaps, as they do not send them to the small offices at first, you might not have seen one. But perhaps before you get this they will get around, for
it takes a letter three or four days to get to you from here, it is such a long, long ways."; cover with age toning, neatly opened at right; stamp with natural straight edge at right, the top appearing at first to be a second straight edge, but hints
of perforations rubbed smooth due to placement; still an exciting item with charming correspondence, Fine to Very Fine, with 2002 A.P.S. certificate. Scott $4,000.
The stamp was issued on Jan. 1, a Sunday, when most post offices
were closed. Jan. 2 is thus considered a First Day of Issue as well. (Image) (Image2)

1893, 50¢ Columbian, Complete Sheet of 100, Only Two Known! (Scott 240), bottom complete sheet of 100 with two plate
no. 77, imprint and "S" blocks of 8 and imprints at sides, traces of o.g. (appears tropicalized), intense deep dark color on bright white paper, mostly strong and intact perfs; natural straight edge at top, light toning in left and bottom selvage and
on a few stamps (barely noticeable), tiny piece of tape in bottom left corner selvage, Fine to Very Fine and a truly important showpiece of American Philately, The other 50¢ complete sheet is also with bottom selvage and is part of a
partial set from the 1¢ to the $2 that we offered at Boston 2026 ($3, $4 and $5 sheets do not exist).
Lester Brookman begins his chapter on the Columbian issues with "Few, if any series of stamps are so sought after by U.S.
collectors as the "Columbians." The degree of completion of the Columbians in any collection is one yardstick by which a collection is measured…I have seen panes of all denominations thru the $1… For many years, it was assumed that all
of the Columbian stamps were printed from plates containing 200 subjects. In Ralph A. Kimble's book "Commemorative Postage Stamps of the United States", credit is given to Prof. L.L. Steimley of the University of Illinois for discovering that only
the One and the Two Cent values were printed in sheets of 200 stamps and that all of the other values were printed in sheets of 100 stamps cut into panes of 50 before distribution to the post offices." This begs the question of how full panes of 100
made it to the public. (Image) (Image2)
