Jul. 21, 1853" circular datestamp, just into at bottom, clear to full on other three sides; very light overall toning, otherwise Very Fine, The earliest and latest dates recorded of this 1853-year-dated New York City datestamp are July 11 & July
25, a mere 16 days apart, and some people believe there is a relation to Crystal Palace Exhibition. Our review of online sales records found 5 additional singles and a horizontal strip of 3 off cover and one example on cover. We list them here in
date order: July 12 (not plated, ex West, Koppersmith & Saadi), July 15 (pos. 5L1L on printed circular to Ohio; ex Neinken and Wagshal), July 18 (pos. 5L1L, ex Allan S. Fox), July 21 (this stamp; ex Neinken), July 23 (pos. 86L1L, ex Vogel), July 25
(unplated), July 25 (64L1L) and July 25 (horizontal strip of 3, pos. 37-39R1L, ex Neinken & Wagshal). Figuring there has to be one example dated July 11, and the auction description for the on cover example notes there are 2 covers with this cancel,
we have a total of 12 examples (7 off cover singles, 1 off cover horizontal pair, and 2 singles on covers, ex Neinken. Scott $350 ($100 + $250 premium). (Image)
