1800 (July 21), stampless military letter from Cremona to Boussay, with Napoleonic contents, referring to Marengo and the crossing of the Great St. Bernard Pass, from René Menou to Citizen François Menou,
struck with crisp black two-line “ARMÉE D’ITALIE / 1ERE. DIVON.” handstamp, reverse with red wax monogram seal, minor scattered tone spots and filing folds, otherwise fine, with a particularly clear military postal marking.
Writing
five weeks after the Battle of Marengo, Menou refers to General Melas, “la victoire du Consul” and the troops having “passés le St Bernard.” Despite the victory, he reports continuing uncertainty: “rien d’officiel sur la paix ou la guerre.” More
personal passages concern the lack of news from home, selling a horse for ten louis and learning Italian through an exchange of lessons with a young local woman, whom he teaches French. (Image 1)

1805 (May 14 / 24 Floréal An XIII), stampless folded letter to General Girard in Paris, with outspoken contents concerning the Revolution and the guillotine, as well as disputed family property, struck with clear red “91
/ POURTRAI” handstamp, reverse with red circular Year XIII datestamp, small portion missing at back edge, slightly affecting the right margin of the final page, otherwise remarkably fresh.
The writer refers to those “that the
guillotine spared” and bitterly declares that “our revolution... has changed so many people who were honest into as many rascals and thieves.” She discusses disputes over woodland and inherited property, expressing financial anxiety and concern over
her approaching death while urging the General to intervene and settle the outstanding affairs. (Image 1)

1809 (August 2), stampless military letter from Marshal Marmont’s headquarters at Grafenegg, Austria, to Neuchâtel, with signed aide-de-camp contents anticipating Napoleon’s visit, addressed to Monsieur de
Perregaux, Conseiller d’État, struck with superb dark red two-line “B AU G AL / ARM DE DALMATIE” headquarters handstamp, manuscript accounting and forwarding markings, reverse with sharply impressed red armorial wax seal, complete four-page letter
signed “Perregaux,” apparently Alexandre Charles de Perregaux, newly appointed to Marmont’s staff.
Writing shortly after joining headquarters, Perregaux describes leaving his regiment, introduces the seven aides-de-camp and discusses
anticipated promotions. He praises Marmont’s concern for soldiers’ food, accommodation and medical care, while recounting evenings playing billiards with the Marshal and joking “if my poor backside could speak” after long days on horseback. The final
page reports that Napoleon was expected within “three or four days” to inspect the corps, with preparations underway and hopes of promotions and decorations. (Image 1)

1830 (March 21), stampless folded letter from Marseille to Philadelphia, seeking the French Consul’s assistance in tracing a missing relative, routed via Le Havre and New York, with black Marseille dispatch c.d.s.,
matching two-line “P.12.P. / MARSEILLE” and double-boxed “VA” handstamps, red New York 23 May transit c.d.s., matching “SHIP” handstamp and manuscript “12½” rating, reverse with manuscript “12” décimes notation and partial red wax seal, complete and
legible contents, ex Carroll Chase.
Writing on March 20, 1830, Henry Estève appeals to Monsieur Pillavoine, French Consul in Philadelphia, for news of his brother-in-law, Pierre Honoré Semat, who had arrived there on May 26, 1829,
lodging with Mr. Bourrier at 40 Union Street. The family had heard nothing since his letter of August 29 announcing plans to leave for New Orleans at the end of September: “Such a long silence on the part of my brother-in-law gives us every reason to
be surprised, and we are deeply in pain over his fate.” Estève asks the Consul to establish his whereabouts and offers to reimburse all expenses, including return postage, illustrating the practical role of consular offices in tracing emigrants and
maintaining contact with families overseas. (Image 1)

1850 (April 3), "An American in Paris," stampless folded letter from Paris to Philadelphia, with contents describing a snowbound crossing of the Simplon Pass and shopping in Paris, struck with red Paris c.d.s. and boxed
“PD,” London Paid transit (4 Apr), black “BR. PACKET / BOSTON” arrival (20 Apr) and manuscript “5” cents due, reverse with Ligne-de-Calais No. 2 railway postmark (3 Apr), complete four-page enclosure written over several weeks, light wrinkles,
fine-very fine.
Writing from Geneva on March 25, the sender describes crossing the Simplon Pass in severe weather: “the snow was fifteen feet deep and besides that it was snowing very fast. Our carriage was put upon a Sledge, the
wheels were taken off.” Her subsequent account of Paris turns to spring fashions, shopping and jewellery: “I treated myself to a very handsome bracelet and breast pin to match. The stone is emerald,” while another purchase presented an “embarras de
choix.” Society gossip, family news and enquiries about passenger berths from Liverpool complete the account of an American traveller’s European tour. (Image
