LotNo. Symbol Cat No. Lot Description
501 CVR   image1883 Registered Cover from Scotland to Fort Ellice, then Returned to D.L.O., mailed from Edinburgh Scotland on JAN.11.1883 at the 4½d rate to Donald Macdonald, "artist" at Fort Ellice Manitoba. It travelled via Windsor Ont (JAN.27), Winnipeg (FEB.1), Brandon (FEB.3) and eventually received a rare boxed "Sent Back to England / Without-A-Reason / For-Non-Delivery" handstamp in red applied once back in England. It has two different Dead Letter Office postmarks, dated MAY.21 and JUN.1. Donald Macdonald was the son of Archibald Macdonald, who was in the fur trading business in Fort Ellice and Fort Qu'Appelle. He went on to become a successful private banker and businessman in Fort Qu'Appelle (which originally began as a seasonal outpost of Fort Ellice). Very fine. (Scan 1) (Scan 2) (All Images)
