1856 "Hidalgos". Jalapa. 1r. Yellow strip of three, 4r. Red and 8r. Lilac strip of six, on a spectacular registered front wrapper to Mexico dated 1860 (Jan. 18), with acknowledgement of receipt and signature on
reverse. The 1r. strip and the first 8r. stamp were partially cut out when the front of the wrapper was cut at the post office, as it occasionally happens with the registered mail, yet the postal markings in the periphery remain most attractive. The
strip of six 8r. paid 55r: 8r. flat rate for registration and first ¼ ounce, and 47r. for 54 ounces (special lottery rate of 25% of the regular rate). Postal rules in force until the 1880s required registered mail to have its front cut out and signed
by the addressee as proof of receipt; the front was then returned to the office of origin, retained there for two years, and ultimately destroyed, which is why so few have survived. A unique and spectacular 55r. franking. Cert. MEPSI (2026). NF
$6,600 for the 8r. as singles off-cover. NF does not price 8r. used beyond strips of three; the largest strip known contains eight stamps. Scott 3, 4, 5. (Image1)

1856 "Hidalgos". Mazatlán. 1r. Yellow, strips of three and four, some stamps close or cut into at bottom, of very little significance given the rarity of this rate, on cover from Culiacán to Mazatlán dated 1858
(July 25), paying 7r. for 1½ ounces beyond 16 leagues. The strip of four is a very scarce used multiple. Cert. MEPSI (2026). Scott 2.

1856 "Hidalgos". Mexico District. 1r. Yellow, block of four and a single, on a cover dated 1856 (Aug. 19), from Mexico to Veracruz, first rate. It paid the double express rate (Extraordinario) of 5r. First Rate
for more than 30 leagues, which was twice the rate, to shorten the time of transit. Folding crease across the cover, not affecting the stamps. A 5r. Extraordinario rate ("por extra° del Texas") is uncommon; since this rate is double the rate for the
weight, it would have been 1 ounce (the rate table states incorrectly 3r. as the rate for that weight). In addition, a usage during the first month of issue. Cert. MEPSI (1986). Scott 2. NF for a block of four used off-cover: $1,150. Ex M. Cortesi. (Image1)

1856 "Hidalgos". Mexico District. 1r. yellow and 4r. red on cover to Veracruz dated 1857 (March 3rd). Stamps are cancelled with the very scarce oval "Administracion Gral. de Correos" and bearing "Por el
extraordinario del paquete Ingles", indicating the express rate sent via the English packet. The express rate was double the normal rate, so in this period it would have been 4r. (less ½ ounce) or 6r. (½ ounce); instead, it paid 5r. beyond 16
leagues. Cover aging and minor tears. An exceptional rate. Cert. MEPSI (2026). Scott 2, 4. (Image1)

a faint black c.d.s. Horizontal filing fold just at the top of the 1r., not affecting the stamp. It paid 9r. for 2 ounces beyond 16 leagues, which represents a very scarce rate. Very few 8r. are known on cover, let alone with such a rate. Cert. MEPSI

1856 "Hidalgos". Mexico District. 1r. Yellow and 8r. Lilac, the latter being an especially fine example, the 1r. with clear margins, on cover to Veracruz dated 1858 (March 3rd), cancelled with the very scarce oval
"Administración Gral. de Correos" and additionally struck "Por el extraordinario del paquete Inglés", meaning express rate sent via the English packet. The express rate was double the normal rate, so in this period it would have been 8r. (¾ ounce) or
10r. (1 ounce); instead it paid 9r. beyond 16 leagues, this being most unusual. Cert. MEPSI (2026). Scott 2, 5. (Image1)

ounces beyond 16 leagues, this being a very unusual rate. Scott 2, 4. (Image1)

1856 "Hidalgos". Puebla. 1r. yellow, strip of four, margins all around except at right, on cover dated 1859 (Feb. 13) from Tehuacán to Puebla, paying double rate. Not tying to cover. Strips of four of this
denomination are seldom found, as higher denominations were available; this was probably the case as it originates from a small town. NF for a strip off-cover: $250. Scott 2. (Image1)

1856 "Hidalgos". Querétaro. 2r. Green, 4r. Red and 8r. Lilac, on a spectacular registered front wrapper to Mexico dated 1858 (Nov. 4). The 2r. and the 8r. stamps were partially cut out when the front of the
wrapper was cut at the post office, yet the postal markings in the periphery remain most attractive. It contained 90 unsold raffle tickets for a lottery, and it paid 14r.: 8r. flat rate for registration and first ¼ ounce, and 6r. (special lottery
rate for 25% of the regular 24-ounce rate, first tariff). Postal regulations up to the 1880s required that registered mail have its front cut out and signed as proof of receipt by the addressee. That front was then returned to the originating office,
kept for two years, and then destroyed. Very few fronts have therefore survived. Cert. MEPSI (2026). Scott 3, 4, 5. (Image1)
