Franco-Prussian War 1871: Armistice Period, cover from Bielefeld, Germany to Paris struck with BIELEFELD cds of despatch (Jan 31) - two days after the Armistice had been signed - with black on pink label at side "Nach Paris
dürfen gegen- / wärtig nur offene, nicht / recommandirte Briefe / befördert werden" applied. The letter was marked "Retour" alongside the Bielefeld cds and "Paris" erased - in all probability as the Post Office under the Prussians had, as yet, no
facilities for delivering unpaid mail. Bielefeld re-arrival on reverse (Feb 8). Rare: the label in use for approximately a fortnight (Image 1)
