1838 (June): Cover of an official letter from the Princely Administration in Belgrad, Serbia to Princely Serbian Agency in Bucharest, internally dated 6 June 1838 (julian) as day of reception, no notes of postage paid or due
to be paid, no markings of any postal administration. The letter was disinfected in Giurgevo on the Romanian shore of the Danube, punched for fumigation and the process was noted on top of the cover in manuscript with "Kar.(antina) Giurgiu / 4 June
1838 S'au Curatit (cleaned), and signature" and a corresponding carantine handstamp was struck below inscrined "KARANTINA GIURGIU" (Kiriac fig. 130). A fascinating item of early Danube Shipmail and Disinfection in Romania. Note: This lot is
accomapnied by the extensive write up of Prof. Vodrazka showing that this letter left Serbia on Wednesday, 1 June 1838 on a vessel from Kladovo serving the Bulgarian shore of the Danube and reaching Ruschuk on Friday, 3 June 1838, was fumigated in
Giurgiu on the opposite side of the Danube when entering Romania on Saturday, 4 June 1838 and was delivered on Monday, 6 June 1838. Reference: Compare for another strike of this handstamp and the handwritten notes in Meyer on page 128. Provenance:
