The first Steam Packet Contracts 1852/56 - Via Cape of Good Hope; 1852 (March 21): Envelope from London, England to Melbourne, Victoria with 1847 Embossed 1/- Green, four margins, just touched at lower left and tied by Barred
Numeral '457' in black. “3”(d) manuscript in black for the incoming ship letter fee. Boxed “ADVERTISED AND UNCLAIMED” in red on the front applied in Melbourne, where on the reverse is written “Opened by John Bourne, not for him”. Very fine and
attractive. Route - Australian Royal Mail Steamship Co: Departed Plymouth, England 24.2.1852 per “Australian”, returned to port twice and mails transferred. Non-contract sailing ship: Departed Plymouth 23.3 per “Albermarle” to Melbourne, arriving
7.7.1852 (108 days). Note: Unusually, this cover is prepaid 1/- for a packet letter, but only 3d for the incoming sailing letter fee. The steamship “Australian” attempted to leave port twice on the 24.2 and the 10.3, both times returning because of
serious leaks. The Victorian mails were transferred to the sailing vessel “Albermarle” (Image 1)
