Clipper sailings 1852/55 - Via Cape of Good Hope; 1855 (Oct 4): Entire letter from London, England to Launceston, Van Diemen’s Land (Tasmania) with manuscript “6”(d) in red representing prepayment for a ½ oz ship letter to Van
Diemen’s Land and “d1” handstamp in red credit to Victoria for transport by an English contract clipper. On the reverse is a very fine Launceston ship letter inwards free datestamp in red for the 31 December. One of the two finest covers from this
wreck, accompanied by an photograph of this vessel. Route - Black Ball Line - Contract clipper: Departed Liverpool 6.10.1855 per “Schomberg”, wrecked off Cape Otway, Victoria 26.12. Mail rescued by the steamer “Queen” from the wreck to Melbourne
28.12. Launceston Steam Navigation Co: Departed Melbourne 30.12 per “Black Swan” to Launceston, arriving 31.12.1855. (86 days). Note: This is one of six covers recorded (the only one addressed to Tasmania) carried on the ill-fated Black Ball Line
clipper “Schomberg” which was wrecked off Cape Otway, about 100 miles southwest of Melbourne, on it’s maiden voyage to Australia, fortunately, without loss of life. All the mail was saved and delivered. The ship was hailed as one of the finest and
most modern clipper ships of her time and built at a cost of over £43,000. The wreck is described in more detail in “Australian Wreck Mail" (Second edition) by Brian Peace at Page 61-64. Rarity: Six covers recorded from the wreck of the
“Schomberg” this being the only one addressed to Van Diemen’s Land. Provenance: Collections Robertson, Howard Longden & Robin Gwynn (Image 1)

Clipper sailings 1852/55 - Via Cape of Good Hope; 1856 (Sept 19): Envelope from London, England to Albany “King Georges Sound”, Western Australia with manuscript “1/-” in red representing prepayment for a ½ oz ship letter to
Western Australia. Manuscript “6” in black for the ship letter inwards fee to be paid by the recipient. Another rare inwards clipper cover from the same correspondence as the previous lot. Route - White Star Line: Departed Liverpool 21.9.1856 per
“Tiptree” to Melbourne, 9.1.1857, arriving 13.8.1856by steamer to Albany. (over 141 days). Note: This was the Final White Star Line clipper voyage before the return to steamers in January 1857. The “Tiptree” lost several masts in a storm and had to
dock at Lisbon for ten days for repairs. Since the repairs were probably makeshift at best, the “Tiptree” took over three months to reach Melbourne, the longest clipper contract voyage recorded. Rarity: Three inward clipper covers recorded to Western
Australia. Provenance: Collection Dr. Cecil Walkley, Abacus Auctions (Dec 2023), lot 3351 (Image 1)
