2740 cover imageIncoming Mail via Southampton; 1856 (Dec 3): Entire letter from Paris, France to Melbourne, Victoria, with Napolèon imperforated 20 c. blue, 40 c. orange, and 80 c. carmine (3), all with four good to large margins and tied by 'grille sans fin'. London transit datestamp of the 4 December ties the 20 c. value and unusually with the “1d” handstamp in red which had been abolished a month earlier after the return to steamship transportation and the end of the “accountancy period”. There is a Melbourne Ship Letter Free datestamp in red for 11 February 1857. Entire refolded, part of backflap missing, some edge wear and minor toning, nevertheless an overall attractive three-colour franking. Cert. Roumet (2024). Route: Departed Paris 3.12.1856 by rail via London 4.12 to Southampton. The European and Australian Royal Mail Co: Departed Southampton 12.12 per “European” to Melbourne, arriving 11.2.1857 (141 days). Note: Although the Australian Colonies were still operating contract clipper ships for mails to England in early 1857, the new steamship contract had just commenced, with this cover from France on one of the first steamship sailings to Australia. Rarity: One of the finest imperforate covers recorded from France to the Australian Colonies (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3) (Image 4)

7032 cover imageAustrian Lloyd Agency in Aleppo 1855 (July 18): Double rate Letter sheet from Marseille to Aleppo, bearing Napoléon imperforated, a single example of 40 c. orange and 80 c. carmine, two singles examples, both touched, tied by bold Petits chiffres '1896' numeral of Marseille. The 40 centimes tied in addition with clear and very rare bilingual Arabic "L + A / An Djanibi Postai Nemce Haleb 1855" (Lloyd Austriaco from the Austrian Post in Aleppo 1855) handstamp (Müller 2024a = 1'400 points / Tranmer fig. 1) in bluish black. Marseille despatch cds alongside, reverse with "BEYROUT SYRIE" transit cds (Aug 5, 1855). Cover with vertical file fold stabilized from the inner side, some corner staining just mentioned for accuracy, nevertheless a unique cover due to the combination of adhesives with this rare handstamp, the only known. Note: This is the only bilingual Austrian Levant postmark - a rarity only in use from 1855/56. Ing. Edwin Müller (1960) knew only two items with this cancellation in black, a number not changed until 1976, when Keith Tranmer published his study on this subject. He stated that this handstamp was used only as an arrival mark, however outgoing covers are known to the describer, all struck in 1855/56 in blue or blackish blue and all being part of the same Dahlah correspondence, showing that this postmark clearly functioned as a temporary arrival and despatch postmark. An updated census of the known material can be found above. Provenance: Christoph Gärtner sale 28 (Juni 2014), lot 2015. Census of the bilingual Arabic " L + A / An Djanibi Postai Nemce Haleb 1855" (Lloyd Austriaco from the Austrian Post in Aleppo 1855) handstamp: Ingoing to Aleppo, 6 covers: Date unknown; Alexandretta to Marcopoli in Aleppo; Collection Västras, Corinphila sale 99, June 1997, lot 9949 1855 (July 18), Marseille to Esdra de Picciotto in Aleppo; Gärtner sale 28, June 2014, lot 2015. 1856 (Feb 8); Alexandretta to Marcopoli in Aleppo; collection 'Monte Napoleone', Corinphila sale 78, Sept. 1988, lot 895; 1856 (March 6); Alexandretta to Marcopoli in Aleppo; collection 'Cihangir', Corinphila sale 121, May 2000, lot 1929 1856 (March 8); Alexandretta to Marcopoli in Aleppo; Collection Hans Smith FRPSL, Corinphila sale 182, Sept 2013, lot 1391 1856 (Nov 6); Constantinople to the Sardinian Consul in Aleppo; Corinphila sale 284, May 2023, lot 1955 Outgoing to London from Dahlah correspondence, sent via Trieste to London, 7 covers: 1855 (June 12); Collection 'Cihangir', Corinphila sale 121, May 2000, lot 1994 1855 (Aug 21); Collection Dubus, Robineau auction, Nov. 1987, lot 551 1855 (Sept 4); Collection Arsman, DF sale, May 2005, lot 20206 1855 (Oct ca); Collection Provera, Corinphila sale 292, Dec 2022, lot 3072 1855 (Dec ca); Collection Schindler, Corinphila sale 255, Sept 2020, lot 7548 1855 (ca); Collection Franz See, Corinphila sale 62, May 1979, lot 2423 1855 (ca); Collection 'Cihangir', Corinphila sale 124, Oct 2000, lot 5756 (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)

7068 cover imageFrench Fieldpost during the Syrian Expedition 1861 (Aug 21): Envelope with full content from Beirut via Marseille to La Seyne sur Mer, Var, internally dated "Vaisseau l'Imperial, rade de Beyrouth 3 Aout 1861", bearing Napoléon imperforated 20 c. blue (Yv 14B), tied by Petits Chiffres '1896' numeral of Marseille, "ESCAD. DE LA MÉDITée / Marseille" cds alongside, reverse with SEYNE-SUR-MER arrival (Aug 23) cds in black. The vessel 'Imperial' was built in 1856 and equipped with 90 canons. Marine Fieldpost was directly transfered to Marseille without passing a Field Post Office. A fine and fresh cover showing the military concession rate, a rare item. Note: The 1860 civil conflict in Mount Lebanon and Damascus, also known as the 1860 Syrian Civil War or the 1860 Christian–Druze war, was a civil conflict in Mount Lebanon during Ottoman rule in 1860–1861 fought mainly between the local Druze and Christians. Following decisive Druze victories and massacres against the Christians, the conflict spilled over into other parts of Ottoman Syria, particularly Damascus, where thousands of Christian residents were killed by Muslim and Druze militiamen. The fighting precipitated a French-led international military intervention (ex Wikipedia). Provenance: Corinphila sale 99 (June 1997), lot 9965 (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3) (Image 4)
