o/pair |
Half-Lengths. Lithographed by Thomas Ham, Melbourne. Original State of the Dies 1850 (Jan 3): First Printing 1 d. orange-vermilion, a horizontal pair, Purves positions 11-12 on the pane of 30 subjects (5 x 6), with good
margins all round for this issue (note gap between the pair to show the difficulty of finding full margined examples), imperceptibly touched at lower left, of resonant fresh colour, neatly cancelled by Butterfly "1/V" of Melbourne in blue-black.
Minor horizontal bend and vertical crease in central margin and thinned at base mostly on the right hand stamp with slight thin at centre, the pair of truly splendid appearance - the finest of the four known used pairs - this being the largest
multiple. A great rarity for the connoisseur - one of the rarest #1's in the world of classic philately. Certs. RPSV (1995), Ceremuga (2026) Gi = £ 30'000+. Note: One unused example is recorded (illustrated in Kellow) and circa 20 examples of
the #1 are known in used condition. Provenance: Collection Charles Lathrop Pack, Harmers, New York, 6-8 and 13-15 Dec 1944, lot 1705; collection Dale-Lichtenstein, Harmers, New York, 14 May 1990, lot 199; collection Rod Perry; collection John Barwis,
