1858/60: Diadem 2 d., Plate 1, the unique Plate Proof sheet of 120 subjects (12 x 10) printed in black on medium wove paper, with circular punch-holes through positions 6, 11, 12, 24, 36, 73, 97, 104 and 105 in indicate where
repairs were required. The reverse bears the manuscript notation "The perforated labels to be renewed. The Plate to be returned as speedily as posible" and is signed and dated by Thomas Richards ("Sydney 13 Sep. 1860") with a Treasury handstamp of
the same day in red. The Plate was then sent back to London for Perkins Bacon to repair the damaged impressions as punched and, whilst the Plate was in London, further positions were also retouched. The sheet also demonstrates just how close some
positions were to each other, especially in the vertical margins between the fourth, five and sixth rows. Creased, especially through the sixth vertical row and the fifth horizontal row, but a unique and extraordinary item for the connoisseur of New
South Wales classic philately. Note: Position 24 (Row 2 / position 12 = Gi. 112a, the 'major retouch') and position 104 (Row 9 / stamp 8 = Gi 133a 'retouched'), it is also interesting to note that Gibbons and Robson Lowe state there were ten
retouches to the Plate I sheet whereas we see here just the nine positions punched to notify the stamps in need of repair. Note: Illustrated in the Robson Lowe Encyclopaedia, Volume IV, page 37-39, where further discussed. Provenance: Collection Dr.
H. Osborne (Image 1)

Cunard Contract Mail, Mail to/from destinations outside the trading area, Mail from New Zealand, 1866 (Aug 20): Envelope from Dunedin to Worcester, Massachusetts, reverse with red "Cobb & Co., Telegraph Line
of Royal Mail Coaches, Dunedin" stage coach operators, endorsed "Via Marseilles", bearing 1864 "Chalon Head" 6 d. red-brown, perf. 12½, Large Star watermark, a horizontal pair and single, in combination with 1866, 2 d. deep blue, perf
12½ Large Star watermark, all tied by "DUNEDIN cds and barred oval duplexes. Carried by P&O Line from New Zealand to Marseille, from there via France to Queenstown and with Cunard’s "China" to Boston 23 October. Manuscript
'8d.' in red crayon noting the credit to the United Kingdom, "BOSTON Br. Pkt. / 5 / Oct 24" integral rate entry postmark with the 5 cents due in Worcester noted in addition twice in red crayon. Perforation irregularities at top, nevertheless a most appealing cover. Note: Mail to the United States did not often use the more expensive route via Marseilles. The following years the route via San Francisco and the Trans-Continental Railroad made the route via
Marseilles even less desirable as it was much slower. Provenance: Schuyler Rumsey sale 118 (November 2024), lot 336 (Image 1)
