3499 cover image1913: 2 d. reddish-orange, a fine and fresh example with vivid colour, tied by light "FIELD POST OFFICE 179 24 JA 18" to large size registered cover to London, large photographer address of Khalil Raad at top left, registration label with the same datestamp on top of it, triangular crowned "PASSED BY CENSOR / No 4217" in violet. Note 1: Jerusalem came under British control on 9 December 1917, when the Ottoman forces surrendered, and General Edmund Allenby formally entered the city on 11 December 1917. The field post office no. 179 was directly subordinate to the 179th Brigade, which in turn was part of the 60th (2/2nd London) Division of the British Armed Forces. It spent all of January 1918 in the immediate vicinity and east of Jerusalem. The troops held the defensive line there and prepared for the next major advance. Just a few weeks later (mid-February 1918), the 179th Field Post Office advanced further east with the brigade to occupy Jericho. Note 2: The year 1918 marks a profound turning point in the life and work of Khalil Raad, considered the first Arab (non-Armenian) photographer in Palestine. Having served as an official military photographer for the Ottoman regime in Palestine during the First World War, he witnessed the transition of Jerusalem to British Mandate in 1918. Raad captured this historic change - the arrival of British troops and the subsequent political and civil upheavals - in groundbreaking documentary photographs (Image 1) (Image 2)

7002 cover imageCourier Post from Damascus to Beirut 1835 (Feb 26): Entire letter from Mr. Jean-Baptiste Baudin, the French agent consulaire in Damascus directed to the Consul de France in Acre, at that time in Beirut, using a postal service oraganised by the British consul-general in Damascus, Mr. Farren, the cover struck by crisp bilingual intaglio „DAMASCUS POST BRIT. CON. GEN. SYRIA / Poste Consulaire Générale Anglaise du Pays de Sham“ seal. On obverse handwritten "No. 2" and "3 ½" (piastres). Inside the easily readable letter in French is the notation that it will be sent via the British consul. An astonishing entire, the finer and earlier of the two recorded, an immaculate strike of this extremely rare handstamp, a major rarity. Signed Todd AIEP. Notes: In 1835 the British Consul-General for Syria, Mr. John William Perry Farren was maintaining a Dromedary Post between Damascus and Al Heet in the south of the country, and a communication by post between Damascus and Beirut. The British had to reorganise their activity in the Levant after the Peace Agreement of Kütahya in 1833, when the Ottoman provinces of Adana and Syria had become part of Egypt, and Ibrahim Pasha of Egypt became governor-general of the two provinces. John William Perry Farren was the British Consul-General for Syria, located in Damascus from August 1830 to September 1837. Sent by Mr. Jean-Baptiste Baudin (1788-1848), born in Marseille but living in Syria nearly all his live. He settled in Damascus around 1825 as a merchant and even had a shop in the Khan Assad Pasha; he was apparently the only European established in Damascus at that time. He then represented the interests of foreign merchants and he even managed the affairs of the French, Austrian and Russian consulates. He later became the agent of the only French consul in Beirut. In 1839, a French consulate was established in Damascus. Finally, he would have been one of the first victims of the cholera epidemic which struck the city in July 1848. Directed to Henry Guys (1787-1877), Consul de France de St. Jean d‘Acre et dependances à Beyrouth. Henry Guys came from a family of French diplomats. He was consul in Alger in 1818, thereafter in Aleppo, Beirut and finally in St. Jean d’Acre, the French name of Akkon, today in Israel. It seems that he lived in Beirut, where he had married in 1824. 7117 piece imageBritish Post Office in Beirut 1873 (Dec 18): Combination cover front from Beirut to Marseille, endorsed "Voie Brindisi", bearing Great Britain 1858/69 2 d. blue pl. 14 tied by ‘G06’ obliterator and by “BRITISH POST OFFICE / BEYROUT” cds in black (Dec 18) paying single rate to Alexandria. In addition, France Siège 40 c. orange (2, slight oxydation) and Cérès 1872 80 c. rose were added, tied by Gros Chiffres ‘5080’ numeral in black. "ALEXANDRIE / EGYPTE" datestamp in black (Dec 25), framed French "PAQ. ANGL.V. BRIND. / A MOD. 3 JANV 74" in red and framed "AFFRANCHISSEMENT INSUFFISANT" in bluish black alongside. Underpaid and therefore taxed with handstruck '12' décimes. Name cut out of address tablet, cover torn in the middle but skillfully repaired, nevertheless an interesting combination cover. Note: A British postal agency was opened in Beirut on 20 March 1873 and the ‘G06’ obliterator used there. Combination frankings with French or Italian adhesives occur as mail to France or Italy, respectively went via the British packet to Alexandria and then by either French or Italian packets to Europe. One has to assume that the French adhesives had been added to the letter already in Beirut. In his 2000 census, Alexander Kaczmarczyk noted 32 covers with combination frankings of Great Britain and France between September 1873 and October 1876.
