7018 cover imageAustrian Consular P.O. in Beirut 1869 (March 5): Letter sheet to Livorno, bearing 1864 Arms pair 2 so. yellow and 5 so. rose, both perf. 9½ in a rare combination franking with 1867 Coarse Whiskers 10 so. blue (2), five fine and fresh examples, the leftmost 2 soldi with minute filing fold, tied by „BERUTTI 5 / 3“ cds in brownish black (Tranmer fig 3), in Brindisi a framed „PIROSCAFI POSTALI ITALIANI“ was struck aside. Reverse with „LLOYD AGENZIE SMIRNE“ and BRINDISI transit cds‘s as well as "MILANO CENTRALE" arrival cds (March 26) and postman's distribution cachet. Sideflaps missing, receiver's name inked out as usual for this correspondence, nevertheless a late presentation of the wrong 28 soldi rate, here overpaid by a further soldo, a very rare franking with only this one known from Beirut. Signed A. Diena; cert. E. Diena (1991) Ferchenbauer unrecorded.
Note: Until October 1866 a single 28 soldi rate to Italy was valid with 20 soldi for the Lloyd and 8 Soldi for Italy. However this rate was used in some offices without interruption also after in October 1866 the Lloyd part of the rate was reduced and even after a new tariff with Italy came into force in October 1867 with 10 soldi for the Lloyd and 15 soldi for Austria and Italy. The present cover is such an example where the sender had to pay 28 / 29 instead of 25 soldi.

4001 cover image1830 (July 13): Entire letter from Bassa Cove to Lowell, Massachussetts, dated "Grand Basam River, Coast of Africa, July 13th 1830" and endorsed "pr. Brig. Dorbet". Carried by this private vessel to Boston where struck with straightline "SHIP" and Boston (Oct. 5) cds., both in red and charged '8' Cents to pay in manuscript red ink comprising the 6 c. inland rate plus 2 c. ship fee. Written by newly arrived missionary H. Webster to his brother in America, the letter recounts Websters journey and first experiences in Liberia: "I avail myself of the opportunity of the Brig Dorbet of New York bound from hence to New York to inform you of my safe arrival in this place after a passage of 35 days which is a very short passage altho an extremely wet and ugly one, and this being the rainy season in this country it rains consistently from morning till night". A fascinating and important entire; the second earliest outgoing letter from Liberia recorded to date, written two years prior to the founding of Grand Bassa Counties principal towns and only ten years after the first colonist's arrival in Liberia. Note: The letters dateline of "Grand Basam River, Coast of Africa" refers to the still almost completely uncolonized estuary of what would later be known as St. Johns River in Grand Bassa County. Two years after the writing of this letter the towns of Edina and Buchanan were founded by the American Colonization Society on either side of the estuary (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)

4002 cover image1834 (Aug. 29): Entire letter written in a first part from Monrovia on 29 August 1834 and in two subsequent parts from the sender, Rev. J. H. Finchley's home parish of Millsburg, Montserrado County on 17 September and 10 October 1834 and adressed to Rev. Vankensalaer in New York. Privately carried to Philadelphia where struck with octagonal "PHIL.A / 23 / MAR" handstamp in red and charged '18¾' Cents inland rate for a distance of 150 to 400 miles in red ink with no ship fee being levvied. Thence privately forwarded to Providence, Virginia with manuscript endorsement "forwarded by his friend" at left, the original New York adress vigourously crossed out in brown ink (this slightly and unobtrusively eroded). A rare and most attractive early letter from a small colonial settlement; the only recorded pre-philatelic correspondance from Millsburg and the only recorded use of the octagonal Philadelphia datestamp on Liberian mail. Note: Rev. Finleys three-page personal letter to his friend Vankensalaer added to over a period of almost two months and not arriving in the US until 8 months after the first lines were written illustrates how few and far between oportunities for the carrying of letters were in this period of total reliance on uncontracted merchant or emigrant vessels, especially for inhabitants of the smaller settlements inland from Monrovia. Finley recounts: "The Captains of vessels & others who visit Monrivia only can form no ideal of the fertility of Calswell & Millsburg [...] Affairs are much more prosperous than I had hoped for but to get things to go on smoothly we want as assistants to the Agent for a year or two a Supt. of schools, a Super-Intendent of Agriculture & a surveyor and explorer [...] There is a great desire amongst the citizens to have schools enough for all their children". Finley goes on to discuss the possible location of such a school, announces in September he is "making preparations to commence a Manual labor & school for Natives & for Colonists" and in the last part of the letter asks his friends in the US and Huntsville Colonization Society to intercede on behalf of freed slave "The Rev. Richard Boon of the Methodist Episcopal Church, one of our near neighbors and a man of intelligence, enterprise and correct principles [who] left Norfolk in Nov. or Dec. 1830. He has a wife and eight Children belonging to V. G. Pruet, Madison County near Huntsville, Alabama" for whose freeing he had made arrangements and a first payment before his departure but which was now encountering problems. 4007 cover image1839 (Sept. 22): Entire letter from Thomas Buchanan in Monrovia to New York, endorsed "Per Ship Jaluedo, Capt. Waters" and carried by private vessel to Norfolk, Virginia, where handed in as a ship letter and struck with "NORFOLK / Va. / JAN 16" cds and straightline "SHIP", both in red, charged '27' Cents due in manuscript upon arrival comprising 25 c. inland rate plus 2 c. ship fee. Contents include the news that "We have just closed the first session of our colonial legislature under the new constitution after transacting a good deal of important business. Amongst other enactments we made one to prohibit the fabrication or introduction of ardent spirits to the Colony. So you see our young republic is setting an example that older and wiser ones would do well to follow". A rare and interesting entire from this significant historical figure. Note: The American politician and diplomat Thomas Buchanan (1809-1841) first arrived in Liberia in the mid-1830s as envoy of the American Colonization Society and worked as first administrator of Grand Bassa before moving to Monrovia in 1839. On 1 April 1839 he was appointed Governor of the colony, in which post he served until his death from yellow fever or malaria some two years later. The city of Buchanan in Grand Bassa county is named in his honour. Provenance: Collection Barbara Fosdyke-Ray, Schuyler Rumsey, San Francisco April 2011, lot 2532 (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)

4008 cover image1849 (July 3): Entire letter from Governor Thomas Buchanan at Monrovia to his sister Juliet in Poughkeepsie, New York, carried privately by the former governor of the Colony of Cape Palmas (Harper), Dr. Hale who sailed to Baltimore that same day and endorsed "Dr. Hale / Brig Trafalgar". Posted as a ship letter by Hale on his arrival in Baltimore with red "BALTIMORE / MD / AUG 30" cds and "SHIP" handstamp at left and charged '21' cents to pay on arrival comprising 18¾ inland postage for 150-400 miles plus 2 c. ship fee. Inconsequential toning at right and on reverse, not detracting from what is an equally attractive and interesting missive from a key figure of Liberia's early colonial history. Note: The American politician and diplomat Thomas Buchanan (1809-1841) first arrived in Liberia in the mid-1830's as envoy of the American Colonization Society and worked as first administrator of Grand Bassa before moving to Monrovia in 1839. On 1 April 1839 he was appointed Governor of the colony, in which post he served until his death from yellow fever or malaria some two years later. The city of Buchanan in Grand Bassa county is named in his honour. In the present letter Buchanan expresses his pleasure at the many opportunities he has recently had to send letters to his sister by way of English or American vessels and confirms the way this letter was forwarded: "Dr. Hale, formerly Governor of Cape Palmas, is with me just now but he sails today for Baltimore and is the bearer of this". He also describes the upcoming 4th of July celebrations which were to include 'fire works displays' in the evening and "through the day we are to have a grand parade & review, a national salute, a public dinner etc. Don't you wish you were here to enjoy the festivities and rejoice with me in the proud distinction of being American". 4009 cover image1841 (July 6): Entire letter from Louis Sheridan at Bassa Cove to the merchant Benjamin Coates in Philadelphia, carried by American merchantman and charged at the port of arrival-rate with handstruck octagonal '6' Cents due marking in blue. A rare and very attractive entire. Note: Louis Sheridan, a prominent and financially successful free person of colour from North Carolina, had initially oposed the idea of colonization but joined the Liberian Colonization Movement after his home state placed increasing restrictions on free people of colour in the 1830s. In 1837 he sold his estate and slaves and moved to Liberia with his familiy in a party of 72. Upon arriving in the colony in 1838, and much to his dismay, he found a colonial administration that poorly equipped the settlers and by its very existence disallowed him from being "freed from the tyranny of white man" even in his new life. In this interesting and forceful letter Sheridan tries to organize better agricultural equipment for the settlers, placing a detailed order of seeds and asking: "Cannot you influence some one to send a ready made Seine [fishing net] or two to the Colony on a venture? I do not say they shall receive as great benefits as the storied Whittington did by the sale of his Cat but I will wish with all my heart he may become Mayor [...] Our rivers abound with fish & we have no means of taking them".
