Forwarder Services from Beirut 1858 (Oct 4): Entire letter from a missionary, signed simply by 'Lorenzo‘, directed to J. Lyons in Montrose PA via Boston. Entrusted to a courier who transported the cover to Boston on behalf of
J. M. Gordon, forwarder who struck on the back his oval "FORWARDED BY / J. M. GORDON. / TREASURER / A.B.C.F.M. / BOSTON.“ handstamp in red with ABCFM being the abbreviation for the 'American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Mission‘. The cover was
franked with 1855 3 c. dull red type I (Scott 11), tied by PAID handstamp in circle and "BOSTON NOV 3 1858" cds in red. A cover of great interest. Note: Among other things, the text describes in detail the appearance and astronomical observation of
the comet Donati, visible in the sky and the reaction of the local population. This comet was a long-period comet named after the Italian astronomer Giovanni Battista Donati who first observed it on June 2, 1858. After the Great Comet of 1811, it was
the most brilliant comet that appeared in the 19th century. Provenance: Mayflower collection, David Feldman sale (Oct. 1983), lot 32624; David Feldman sale (May 2004), lot 30271 (Image 1)
