The Waghorn Organisation 1841 (May 22): Entire letter from Cairo with (very rare) printed heading "Messrs. Waghorn & Co's. India Steam Agency Offices, Egypt", written and signed by Thomas Waghorn to J. Sainsbury in London
endorsed "via Southampton", struck wth British P.O. ALEXANDRIA cds in black (May 22), carried on the P&O "Oriental" to Malta (May 26) where disinfected by slitting and struck with circular "PURIFIÉ AU LAZARET / MALTE" in black, thence via "HMS
Acheron" to Marseilles (May 29) and on to London (June 1) with red cds of receipt where charged "2/5d." due to pay. Fascinating contents "My dear Sir, The Pasha of Egypt has not yet arrived at Carlizaten so far as to have any museum. His finances are
not just now in a very flourishing state and although Europe has settled the hereditary succession of Egypt upon him, still the besotted Sultan nor the bigoted and fanatic Turks have not. The Pasha is getting all his means together for War, for fight
he and Egypt will to the death against Russian domination at Constantinople. Think of setting your museum elsewhere, it will never take here. The Pasha's Policy is English now, not French. War has broken out again with China which all men could see
must inevitably happen except Lord Palmerston & Capt. Elliott". Note 1: In late May 1841, Ottoman Sultan Abdülmecid I issued a series of imperial firmans that officially granted Muhammad Ali Pasha hereditary rule over Egypt and the Sudan.
