2713 cover imageT & T: Put this text outside in front of this lot: Historical overview During the early ships under sail period, the only specific mail routes were via Cape Horn or overland via Suez. These mail routes did not expand until developments in steam technology made alternative options more viable. For mail not originating in England, Europe or the United States, colonists had to wait for the next available merchant ship from a particular destination. Ship captains would often wait in harbour for two months until they had a sufficient cargo to sail. Letters from the more unusual destinations could take many months to be delivered. Routes within this section are represented by via the Tasman Sea; the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. Lot description: Early Ships Under Sail - Via the Pacific Ocean; 1836 (December 19): Entire letter from Canton, China to Sydney, New South Wales with Sydney arrival datestamp of the 26 February 1837 and a manuscript “3”(d) for the inwards ship letter fee to be paid by the recipient. On the reverse is a manuscript “1/3”(d) inwards ship letter fee for a bundle of five letters of which another letter dated 13 August 1836 is enclosed. Route - Private sailing ship: Departed Canton 22.12.1836 per “Kilmaurs” to Sydney, arriving 26.2.1837 (67 days). Note: The entire is addressed to Edward Crooke, a family of London tea merchants. Edward and his brother James immigrated to Canton in 1836, with Edward leaving for Sydney shortly afterwards. The contents refer to Captain Elliot who was intimately connected to the 1st Opium War. “It is now known that Capt Elliot has superceded Sir G.B. Robinson as Senior Superintendent” with £3,000 a year…..Capt E is, we hear, coming up to have a talk with old Howqua - I propose to turn him out if he comes.” Howqua was the senior Hong Kong merchant in Canton and reputedly the wealthiest man in China. He also asks “let me know about Kangaroo Land”. Rarity: One of the most significant inwards covers of the Australian Colonies and the earliest letter (accompanied with the lot) and cover from China to Australia recorded. Provenance: Collection Lawrence (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)
