45 c image1863 IRELAND to SAINT-MARTINS-NB DOUBLE RATE, stampless cover from CLONMEL-IRELAND on JAN12'1863, missed the JAN11'1863 Cunard sailing from QUEENSTOWN-IRELAND and re-routed to LONDONDERRY-IRELAND (port of Moville) to make the JAN17'1863 sailing of the Allan Line packet SS NORWEGIAN, the ship arrived at the winter terminus of PORTLAND-MAINE on FEB1'1863 after spending almost 2 days trapped in the harbour ice, then onward overland to SAINT-JOHN-NB on FEB11'1863 with arrival at St-Martins FEB12'1863, originally marked COLLECT 8d (17¢) for the Cunard British ½ ounce packet rate but the Portland exchange office found the letter to be over the ounce limit, the double Canadian packet rate of COLLECT 25¢ was charged (2 x 12½¢ per ½ ounce), the SS NORWEGIAN made only 3 more Portland sailings before she was wrecked on JUN14'1863 on the Cape Breton coast, some stains and creases, a very scarce Allan Line conveyance with lots of rate/route complications and great history, F-VF est (Image) $200+ US
