8257 imageGB.QUEEN VICTORIA - A VICTORIAN DOCTOR'S CORRESPONDENCE. 1887-1900. A fascinating accumulation of covers, most containing their original letters presented in two boxes. Most of the letters are between a Dr. Joseph Roberts and his sweetheart Miss Ethel Wright. We see (1 box) 350+ letters addressed to the Doctor posted from around the UK & Isle of Man & (1 box) 150+ letters addressed to Miss Wright. Dr. Roberts lived at various addresses in North Wales and mostly northern England, Miss Wright lived in Lymm, near Warrington, also Blackpool and later in Hampshire. They wrote to one another frequently (often more than once a week, 1892 80+ letters, 1893 60+ letters, 1894 60+ letters, 1895 50+ letters etc) and the letters contain an interesting Social History record of Victorian day to day life, Dr. Roberts sometimes mentions his work, referring to sick patients, a work house where he was medical officer etc. We also see a few letters from other family members. Each envelope franked with 1d lilac die II, cancels include various squared circle marks, duplex cancels, hooded circles and circular date stamps. Unusual to see such a complete correspondence (520+ covers). (Image1) (Image2) (Image3) (Image4) (Image5) (Image6)
