7856 imageTRANSVAAL 1869 FIRST JEPPE PROVISIONAL Pre-paid 6d postal stationery envelope of white wove paper with a gummed flap, bears a fair strike of the 30mm circular "POTCHEFSTROOM / (G.P.E.) / 1869 / Z.A.R." handstamp with "6d" red manuscript inserted by hand. In 1869 Friedrich Heinrich Jeppe the ZAR's Postmaster-General issued this pre-paid envelope in anticipation of the first stamps arriving from Germany. "Transvaal Philately" by Mathews, pub. 1981 (page 127, "Postal Stationery" by Paul van Zeyl) states that although Earee (philatelic expert 1846 - 1928) recorded 3 examples of this strike there appears to be one surviving example, this cover appears to be another. Some peripheral staining and wrinkling. A significant Transvaal rarity. (Image1) Est. £350-400
