VERY FINE. THE UNIQUE ON-COVER USAGE OF THE 3-CENT 1857 ISSUE IMPERFORATE HORIZONTALLY. A MAGNIFICENT COVER AND ONE OF THE HIGHLIGHTS OF THE WAGSHAL 3-CENT COLLECTION.

A review of the Philatelic Foundation records and Power Search produced only two other examples of this rarity: a vertical pair and single on piece, also postmarked at Griffin Ga. (ex Twigg-Smith and Hulme), and a top-margin pair faintly cancelled (ex Hulme). This is the only known example on cover and is also the largest known multiple.

THE FINER OF ONLY TWO KNOWN EXAMPLES OF THE 1857 3-CENT TYPE III WITH DOUBLE IMPRESSION. A GREAT RARITY OF THE ISSUE.

A review of the Philatelic Foundation records and Power Search located only this example and the one in the following lot as genuine double impressions. There are a couple of additional stamps that have been certified as partial "kiss impressions", which typically show doubling of a small part of the design.
