FINE APPEARANCE. AN ATTRACTIVE AND RARE EXAMPLE OF THE 5-CENT 1847 ISSUE IN THE BROWN ORANGE SHADE ON A COVER TO FRANCE. ESPECIALLY DESIRABLE TIED BY FOUR DIFFERENT MARKINGS, INCLUDING THE ANGLO-FRENCH ACCOUNTANCY HANDSTAMP.
Anglo-French accountancy markings were applied on mail to France sent via Great Britain. The marking indicates they were unpaid letters exchanged with France arriving from countries overseas. By mid-1851 the markings were no longer used.
