VERY FINE. A REMARKABLE USE OF THE ANTEBELLUM BUCHANAN CAMPAIGN ENVELOPE IN THE CONFEDERATE MAILS DURING THE CIVIL WAR.

This type of Buchanan campaign envelope was manufactured during the campaign of 1856. In this instance, it was used by a resident of Marion, Alabama, during the war. Because Buchanan was popular in the South for his political views, this might also be regarded as a patriotic use. (Image)

297 c 10c Blue, Die A (11).> Full to large margins, beautiful deep shade and impression, tied by Savannah Ga. Paid Jul. 3 (1863) circular datestamp on cover to Marietta Ga. with <Southern Confederacy. Free Trade With
All The World propaganda design,> l10c Blue, Die A (11). Full to large margins, beautiful deep shade and impression, tied by "Savannah Ga. Paid Jul. 3" (1863) circular datestamp on cover to Marietta Ga. with "Southern Confederacy. Free Trade With All The World" propaganda design, lightly cleaned, small sealed opening tear passes just under stamp

FRESH AND EXTREMELY FINE. THIS SIMPLE DESIGN, ABANDONING THE USUAL FLAG MOTIF IN FAVOR OF A POLITICAL SLOGAN, IS ONE OF THE RAREST OF CONFEDERATE PATRIOTICS.

Throughout the war the Confederate government hoped to use international commerce to raise hard money and influence other nations to support the Southern cause. This rare slogan design promotes that effort. More effective, however, was the Federal blockade that isolated the Confederate States and disrupted regular trade routes.
