Postmasters Provisionals
Lot Sym. Lot Description
1 c Baltimore Md., 5c Blue on Buff Entire, Black Signature Handstamp (3XU1 var).> Clearly struck provisional markings with <James M. Buchanan struck in brownish black,> Baltimore Md. Oct. 15 (1846) circular datestamp
on buff cover to Mrs. Gilbert RogBaltimore Md., 5c Blue on Buff Entire, Black Signature Handstamp (3XU1 var). Clearly struck provisional markings with "James M. Buchanan" struck in brownish black, "Baltimore Md. Oct. 15" (1846) circular datestamp on buff cover to Mrs. Gilbert Rogers Jr. in Washington D.C., minor wear and waterstains along edges

VERY FINE EXAMPLE OF THE 5-CENT BALTIMORE PROVISIONAL ENTIRE. A RARE COLOR COMBINATION WITH THE "JAMES M. BUCHANAN" STRAIGHTLINE STRUCK IN BLACK.

This entire is number 4 in the Hayes census. Only five are recorded in the Hayes census on buff entires with the signature in black. Another three or four of the Blue & Black combination are known on gray entires.

Ex Ferrary and Caspary. With 1989 P.F. certificate. The Scott U.S. Specialized mentions that entires with the black signature handstamp were issued first and "sell for more," but inexplicably this color combination is not given its own major listing. Scott Retail for more common blue signature handstamp (Image)

straightline ^PAID 5 CENTS^ in blue -- tBoscawen N.H. Provisional Collateral. Important and instructive group of four stampless covers whose markings bring together all the key elements of the unique 5c Provisional, including an 1848 cover with a straightline "PAID 5 CENTS" in blue -- the "Paid" and "Cents" being the same as appear on the provisional, 1847 and 1849 Boscawen covers each with a "5" handstamp in blue and red respectively -- in the same style (though 2mm larger) as the stamp's "5", a ms. stampless in the hand of postmaster Worcester Webster with his free frank and contents entirely in his hand. Also included is a 1934 postcard with a photo of the unique provisional and printed message, "Compliments of Frank Marquis, Inc." (as collectors know, Marquis bought the cover at the 1933 Hind sale for $5,000, unable to pay for it, he dropped from sight and was found months later, an amnesiac, wandering in Helena, Montana). Fine-Very Fine, excellent collateral for the student, and a very difficult group to assemble -- the unrecorded straightline handstamp was first reported in a March 1992 article in The American Philatelist (Image)

Chubbuck, Bratto.", large margins except where just into frameline at upper right corner, red "Paid" cancel, two faint vertical creases that are invisible on face of stamp

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. ONE OF FIVE RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THE BRATTLEBORO PROVISIONAL STAMP WITH IMPRINT -- THE ONLY UNITED STATES POSTMASTER'S PROVISIONAL ISSUE WITH AN IMPRINT.

Only five of the 52 Brattleboro provisional stamps recorded by Wall (32 off cover and 20 stamps on 19 covers) are from Position 8, below which the imprint is engraved. Two of the five are off cover, and three are on covers (one of which is cut in at bottom).

Although faintly creased, this stamp is among the choicest Brattleboro provisionals. Only five off-cover Brattleboro stamps are sound, and many of the others are cut in or have serious faults. This is among the top tier of condition, and it has the added feature of an imprint.
