VERY FINE. AN OUTSTANDING EXAMPLE OF THE MARQUIS DE LAFAYETTE'S FREE FRANK WITH HIS RANK AS MAJOR-GENERAL IN THE AMERICAN ARMY.

John Dickinson was the governor of Pennsylvania from 1782 to 1785, which narrows the timeframe of this undated cover. Lafayette was in the United States and France during this period, and it is possible this privately-carried cover originated in either country. (Image)
