Position 70R1E with large right sheet margin showing the absence of imprint, other margins large at bottom with portion of adjoining stamp to just in at top left, rich color, light grid cancel, Very Fine and quite rare, the early state of Plate 1 was printed without the Toppan, Carpenter, Casilear & Co. imprint or plate number; after a short time the imprint was added to the plate, starting at the fourth horizontal row from the top and ending at the 7th row -- this stamp, Position 70R1E, in its later state would show a portion of the imprint in the sheet margin -- this is the only example we have offered at auction in at least 25 years (Image)

515   Image3c 1851 Issue, Complete Plate Numbers 1 through 8 (11, 11A). Eight singles, from Plates 1 Late, 2 Late, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8, each with sheet margin showing the complete plate number and part imprint, all are right margin examples except for Plate No. 7, all with full to gigantic margins except No. 7 which is cutting in at bottom right (but still the finest of the few known), most in choice Brownish Carmine or Rose Red shades, Plate No. 5 with tiny scissors-cut, Plate No. 7 with corner margin crease and No. 8 with trivial toning on back only

A SPECTACULAR COMPLETE SET OF 3-CENT 1851 ISSUE PLATE NUMBERS. HIGHLY EXHIBITABLE AND EXCEEDINGLY RARE.

This set was built by Dr. Wilbur F. Amonette and we believe it to be the finest showing of plate number copies ever assembled, with all the numerals complete. Since the plate number portion of the imprint -- "No. X" -- straddled two stamps, some singles show plate numbers that are only partially complete. This set shows complete numbers and two stamps with complete "No." as well (Plates 1 and 7). Plate 7 is very rare by itself, with only a few known, so any attempt to duplicate or improve upon this set would be extremely difficult, if not futile.

VERY FINE. A CHOICE AND RARE ORIGINAL-GUM BLOCK OF TWELVE OF THE 3-CENT 1851 ISSUE, SHOWING THE PLATE 3 "THREE ROWS" RECUTTING ADJUSTMENTS.

The "Three Rows" variety is the result of recutting that was required due to the unintentionally wide spacing between the eighth and ninth vertical rows and the narrow spacing between the ninth and tenth vertical rows of the left pane of Plate 3. The frameline recutting was executed in a way that attempted to minimize the visual spacing anomalies, by adding framelines where the spacing was too wide and using the inner framelines in lieu of outer framelines where the spacing was too narrow. This block vividly demonstrates this, with normal stamps in the left block of six, extra frameline recuts between the vertical rows in the right block and lack of outer framelines at right. This is the first unused multiple of this variety we have offered since keeping computerized records (Image)
